OSHA Standards and Enforcement
State Standards
There are twenty-eight OSHA-approved State Plans, operating state-wide occupational safety and health programs. State Plans are required to have standards and enforcement programs that are at least as effective as OSHA’s and may have different or more stringent requirements.
The following sections highlight OSHA standards, directives, standard interpretations, and national consensus standards that pertain to occupational exposures to crystalline silica.
OSHA Standards
General Industry (29 CFR 1910)
- 1910.94, Ventilation [related topic page]
- 1910.1000, Air contaminants
- Table Z-3, Mineral dusts
Maritime (29 CFR 1915)
Construction Industry (29 CFR 1926)
- 1926.55, Gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists
- Appendix A, Gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists
- 1926.57, Ventilation
OSHA Directives
- National Emphasis Program – Crystalline Silica. OSHA Directive CPL 03-00-007, (January 24, 2008). Includes an updated list of industries commonly known to have overexposures to silica; detailed information on potential hazards linked to silica and about current research regarding silica exposure hazards; guidance on calculating the Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) for dust containing respirable crystalline silica in the construction and maritime industries; and guidance on conducting silica-related inspections.
