A carbon fiber hat is made of, you guessed it, carbon fiber. Aircraft, bikes and cars are a few other applications this material and process is used in. It is lightweight and very strong which is a no brainer for protecting your noggin. But compared to an run of the mill hard hat, the carbon fiber hat is expensive. They are tough, stronger, more durable, and lighter than the basic plastic brain buckets. Although if you purchase a carbon fiber lid, you will get greater protection. They have more structural rigidity, take more cycles til failure, do not easily dent, break, or scratch.
Carbon fiber hard hats come with many benefits that range from higher strength to weight ratio, durability and design (read they look cooler on the job). Military and NASA use carbon fiber technology in many applications.
If you wear it, do you need to worry about the protection of your head? Yes! Although, as with vehicles, a Smart Car passes crash tests, but I still feel safer in my F350.

Suggested replacement is based on service life (Based on when the hard hat was placed into service, not the manufacture date).
As a general guideline we recommend replacing hard hats every five years regardless of outside appearance, but this can vary due to use and job site conditions

Conclusion: We like and use all of these hats. The fiber reinforced is a bit heavier than the carbon fiber and both are close to the weight of plastic. Either materials provide better protection than plastic seen on most traditional inexpensive hard hats. They have a higher quality construction and the suspension inserts are more durable and comfortable then on the econ hats. Are they worth it? At the cost of a few cases of beer i say they are.
